On Wednesday, di Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, unveil a new electricity meter manufacturing company, Hexing Livoltek, wey dey located for Lekki area of Lagos State. Dis new factory dey part of di federal government’s effort to promote local content and reduce reliance on imported meters.
Adelabu emphasize di importance of local content development in di energy sector, saying it will help create jobs and boost di economy. He also mention say di government dey prioritize domestic production of energy components to reduce di country’s dependence on imports.
Di minister talk about di significant metering gap in Nigeria, where over seven million electricity consumers still rely on estimated billing. He assure say di new factory and di ongoing metering initiatives will help address dis issue and promote transparency in billing.
As part of di government’s broader strategy, 1.3 million meters are expected to be delivered between December 2024 and di second quarter of 2025. Dis initiative dey under di Nigeria Distribution Sector Recovery Program (DISREP), which aim to install 3.2 million meters in total.
Adelabu express optimism say di new meters will not only improve billing efficiency but also mitigate disputes between power distribution companies and their customers. He believe say di power sector could generate more revenue if di funds currently spent on diesel and petrol for independent power generation were redirected into di power sector.
