The Federal Government don appoint Dr. Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, wey be the Pro-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as the chairman of the negotiation team to renegotiate the 2009 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
This new committee, which include 53 members, get three months to conclude their task. The inauguration of the committee happen on Tuesday in Abuja, and it mark the fourth time the government dey set up such committee since 2017. Previous committees were led by Wale Babalakin in 2017, Munzali Jubril in 2020, and Nimi Briggs in 2022.
However, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) no dey happy with the way the inauguration go. Dem condemn the process, saying it favor ASUU too much and sideline other unions. Dem accuse the government of prioritizing ASUU while treating other unions like afterthought.
SSANU and NASU express fear say the renegotiation go favor academic staff more than non-teaching personnel. Dem also complain say the President of ASUU get prominent role during the inauguration, while dem be mere spectators. Dem call out the Federal Government for perceived bias and disregard for other unions’ views.
Dr. Yayale Ahmed promise say dem go work together to ensure workable agreements that go guarantee peace and stability in the universities.
