One Nura Mas’ud, a 26-year-old man from Mu’azu village in Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command for allegedly setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire.
According to the police spokesperson, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the incident occurred on October 8, 2024, when Nura Mas’ud went to his family house with a petrol canister, poured it on his grandmother, and set her ablaze. The elderly woman later died while receiving treatment at a hospital.
The suspect, who suffers from mental illness and has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital, admitted to the crime during interrogation. He claimed that his grandmother had upset him by expressing concern about his physical appearance and health, despite his warnings to her.
The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to thoroughly investigate the case and ensure vigorous prosecution to deter similar incidents in the future.
