Nigerian-born bodybuilder, Samson Dauda, has made history by winning the 2024 Mr. Olympia title. This victory is a significant milestone in his career, marking the first time a Nigerian has claimed the prestigious award. Dauda, known as “The Nigerian Lion,” took home a record-breaking $600,000 prize, the largest first-place payout in the event’s history.
Dauda’s journey to the top was not easy. He had come close to winning in 2023 but finished third. However, his dedication and continuous improvement paid off in 2024. Dauda’s impressive physique, symmetry, and stage presence captivated the judges, securing him the top spot against a highly competitive field that included reigning champion Derek Lunsford and Hadi Choopan.
The competition was fierce, with Dauda standing out from the beginning of the prejudging round. His ability to maintain his conditioning throughout the multiple rounds of posing and his dynamic presentation on stage were key factors in his victory. Dauda also won the People’s Choice award, indicating his popularity among fans.
Dauda’s victory is not just a personal achievement but also a significant moment for Nigerian sports. Born in Nigeria, Dauda moved to the UK and started his athletic career as a rugby player before transitioning to bodybuilding. His win marks the end of a 27-year drought since a UK-based bodybuilder last held the Mr. Olympia title.
In addition to the monetary prize, Dauda received a newly introduced championship ring, courtesy of Olympia owner Jake Wood. His wife, Marlena, who acted as his coach this year, played a crucial role in his preparation, making them the first husband-wife duo to win the Mr. Olympia title.
Dauda’s future plans include continuing to compete actively, contrary to the tradition of Mr. Olympia champions competing in just one show a year. He expressed his love for bodybuilding and his intention to give back to the sport that has given him so much.
