Naija No Dey Work Again, Northern Youths Cry Out

Northern Nigerian youths, under the umbrella of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), have expressed deep concern and frustration over the worsening economic and security conditions in the region. During a one-day community engagement programme in Katsina, CNG President Jamilu Charanchi stated that the country “is no longer working” and that formal and informal institutions have failed to address the growing challenges.

The youths lamented the impact of recent economic policies, including the devaluation of the naira, high inflation, the removal of the petroleum subsidy, and increased electricity tariffs. These factors have further deteriorated the living conditions of people in northern Nigeria, with many struggling to afford even one meal a day. Insecurity, particularly banditry, has also become a pervasive issue, with Charanchi noting that “insecurity is walking with two legs in the northern part of the country”.

The CNG highlighted various socio-economic challenges facing the region, including drug abuse, youth unrest, collapsing social values, widespread poverty, unemployment, and illiteracy. Despite its rich cultural heritage and natural resources, northern Nigeria remains one of the least developed regions in the country. The group emphasized the need for a shift from government-led approaches to society-based solutions, encouraging community members to take charge of addressing these issues.

The recent violent protests across the country, which resulted in significant loss of life and destruction of property, were cited as consequences of decades of failed leadership in the north. The CNG believes that collective action and community involvement are crucial for addressing these challenges and promoting development in the region.

In response to these challenges, the Katsina State government has initiated some laudable programmes, including scholarships for indigent students, creation of a ministry for internal security, and establishment of Community Watch Corps, which have helped in reducing insecurity by 70%. However, more needs to be done to address the deep-seated issues affecting the region).
