Naija Communications Commission (NCC) don finally greenlight 9mobile’s long-awaited roaming deal with MTN Nigeria. This one mean say 2.97 million 9mobile customers go fit roam with MTN’s vast network, wey dey carry them waka finally.
MTN don announce this gist through dem notice wey dem file for Nigerian Exchange. Dem dey tout am as one big three-year deal wey go fit ginger life for all the frustrated 9mobile users wey don suffer for network wahala. Check am as wahala dey too much – people dey complain say network no dey work, just like say dem go buy new phone but dem get old school network.
Kemi Alaka no fit hide im frustration. E talk, “When NCC go move for 9mobile? E no dey work.” Doyin Adebiyi join am, dey scatter ground too, “My 9mobile no dey receive calls, but I no fit just throway am because e dey linked to my account.” Na true talk; no be everybody fit just dive enter new network anyhow. After all, dem go say loyalty no get price.
This national roaming wey NCC don approve go make e easy for any type of subscriber wey wan make calls and use data even if dem dey outside their own operator’s coverage area. Na so e be, all these alliances dey support infrastructure sharing and na wetin MTN don dey do with Airtel before.
According to Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, this agreement na big deal for the industry. E no too dey easy for telecoms to carry all dis wahala for head alone, everybody suppose join hands to make things better – you know na the team work make the dream work? Na so we go fit achieve everything wey we want. Dem don work for this deal since 2020, and finally dem don land am.
But wahala no dey stop there for 9mobile side; dem don face plenty palava since dem lose dem technical partner and investors. Now dem don pass hand over to LH Telecoms Nigeria, but subscribers don dey waka, reduce from 4.65 million to 2.97 million. Wetin dey happen? Maybe dis new agreement go fit turn around for dem.
For MTN wey get over 90 million subscribers, dis deal go help dem grab beta access to 9mobile’s spectrum holdings – dem dey collect 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz bands. So, na win-win for everybody.
