President Bola Tinubu don add another big name to im collection of public facilities wey dey carry im moniker. The Federal Government don rename the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after am, making am the latest infrastructure to bear im name since e become president for May 2023.
Minister of Works Dave Umahi announce the decision on Thursday, saying the 750-kilometre highway was named after the president because the project was conceived during Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State nearly three decades ago. Umahi talk say: “That highway is named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway. By the powers conferred on me as Minister of Works, in consultation with my Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, we decided to name it after him because of his dream for it.”
The minister recall say Tinubu first dream the idea while serving as governor of Lagos state more than 20 years ago. “He had that dream about 27 years back as governor of Lagos State. It is one thing to dream and another thing to have the grace of God to actualise that dream,” e add.
This announcement add to a growing list of roads, buildings, schools and public facilities named after the president over the past two years. Since Tinubu take over, many states and federal agencies don rush to name things after am. In March 2024, Niger State Governor Umar Bago rename the Abubakar Imam International Airport for Minna after Tinubu, citing the president’s support for the state. The airport wey originally bin dey named after writer Abubakar Imam less than one year earlier.
In May 2024, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike rename the Abuja Southern Parkway as Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way after completing the major road wey link Christian Centre to Ring Road One. Also for that same month, the National Assembly rename their newly completed library after Tinubu. The facility wey start under the Ninth Assembly, finish by the Tenth Assembly and inaugurate by the president.
In December 2024, the Nigeria Immigration Service name their command and control centre the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC). Dem describe am as a key facility for strengthening border management, migration control and national security.
In January 2025, the federal government approve the establishment of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, Abuja. The school go provide technological, vocational and entrepreneurial education. Later that month, the Nigerian Army name their newly built barracks in Asokoro after Tinubu. The military say the gesture na to “give honour to whom honour is due.” The facility include residential accommodation, worship centres, sports facilities and other support infrastructure.
In June 2025, Wike rename the renovated Abuja International Conference Centre as the Tinubu International Conference Centre. The facility, one of Nigeria’s leading venues for government events and international conferences, also get im halls named after other top government officials.
Beyond the naming, Umahi also announce say President Tinubu don approve an additional 400-kilometre extension to the country’s Fourth Legacy Highway. The 700km Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Maiduguri Superhighway go extend to Taraba, increasing the project to 1,100 kilometres. The minister speak during a media briefing in Abuja, describing the approvals as major milestones in the federal government’s infrastructure renewal programme.
The Fourth Legacy Highway, initially conceived as a 700-kilometre corridor linking Akwanga in Nasarawa State to Maiduguri in Borno State through Jos, Bauchi, Gombe and Biu, go now extend into Taraba State. Umahi say the expansion go strengthen connectivity across the North-central and North-east while opening up more economic opportunities.
Also, Tinubu approve the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway after sections of the highway deteriorate barely five years after completion. “The president approved yesterday the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Road, and that is the justification for our fight for the use of reinforced concrete pavement,” Umahi explain. E note say the existing asphalt pavement don repeatedly fail despite repairs. “It is 135 kilometres by two carriageways. That project is not up to five years old, yet it has already started failing. We took journalists there, we took members of the National Assembly there. You could see the road failing. They repaired it and it still failed,” e add.
According to am, reinforced concrete technology offer a more durable alternative. “The answer is to reconstruct it using reinforced concrete pavement that will last between 50 and 100 years, maintenance-free.”
For Taraba State, Umahi say the President approve the design, procurement and award of the Lao Bridge project. E also disclose say Tinubu approve the review and completion of the abandoned Ibi bridge project. “That bridge was awarded in 2018, got to about 40 per cent completion and was abandoned. Yesterday, the President approved the review and completion of the Ibi Bridge in Taraba State,” Umahi say. The minister also announce presidential approval for an additional 400 kilometres of dual carriageway on the East-West Road corridor. “The President also approved 400 kilometres of dualised East-West Road running from Lokoja down to Benin. This is another very important intervention in our road infrastructure,” e conclude.
