US President Donald Trump don finally pay E. Jean Carroll the money wey court order am to pay for sexual abuse and defamation case. Judge Lewis Kaplan on Wednesday give order to clerk to release the money wey dey inside court account, plus interest, to Carroll.
Three years ago, a New York jury find Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll inside Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room for Manhattan for mid-1990s. The jury also hold am liable for defaming Carroll for 2022 after im deny her allegations for Truth Social. Carroll, wey be former magazine columnist wey now be 82 years old, get $5 million for that first case.
Later, another jury for separate case order Trump to pay Carroll additional $83 million for defamatory remarks wey im make. But that judgment still dey under appeal.
Trump put the damages inside court-controlled account soon after the verdict, while appeals process dey go. The Supreme Court recently decline to hear im appeal, so the money don dey ready for release.
Trump spokesman talk say: “The American People stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll Hoaxes.” The spokesman add say: “President Trump will keep winning against Liberal Lawfare, as he continues to focus on his mission to Make America Great Again.”
But later that day, Trump appeal the order to release the funds to federal court of appeals. The judge no specify when the funds go reach Carroll.
Trump don always complain say Judge Lewis Kaplan allow evidence wey negatively affect how jury see am. But federal appeals court agree with jury verdict last year, say Kaplan no make errors wey warrant new trial.
Carroll lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, write for court filing say: “After four years of litigation across every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end.” She add say Carroll now entitle to get payment of the money due under the judgment.
Trump still maintain say im go continue fight for im social media platform: “I will continue the fight against this Weaponization and Lawfare Case against me, including the ridiculous claim of Defamation, with all of my power and strength.”
