Western New York Independent Living dey host Disability Pride Festival to celebrate Disability Pride Month. Di festival get theme wey be “Art of Access,” e dey bring together diverse disability community to show their performances and artwork.
Dis festival go commemorate 36 years since Americans with Disabilities Act pass. According to Holly Nidell, co-chair of di festival, “E dey celebrate individuality, and e dey champion di rights of people with disabilities, fostering community pride and inclusivity.” She add say, “Dis year feature day of fun and entertainment for people of all ages and all abilities.”
At di festival, dem go get live entertainment, unity walk, and interactive art activities. More dan 60 resource tables from community organizations go dey. Although progress don dey for accessibility, organizers talk say still get more steps to take.
Frank Collins, senior VP of mortgage servicing at M&T Bank and senior management sponsor of di bank’s Disability Advocacy Employees Group, talk say, “About 30 years ago, di Americans with Disabilities Act sign, marking historic step forward for expanding access and opportunity for people with disabilities. While meaningful progress don dey, dis month na reminder of di work wey still dey, and our shared responsibility to create spaces where people feel safe, welcomed, and able to thrive.”
