Netflix don release season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series, but e don dey struggle to meet fan expectations. The show debut at number 2 for Netflix top 10 list, wey no be ideal, but the series no dey risk cancellation before season 3. The renewal don happen long ago as the show always plan to adapt the original three seasons.
Just yesterday, production don wrap for season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, even as season 2 dey air. That kind of thing fit only happen with hyper-early renewals and back-to-back filming, and e mean say the waiting time go shorter pass normal for Netflix series. Based on past data, season 3 release date go come sooner than many expect.
But the reception for season 2 no too sweet. E get middling 67% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and lower 63% audience score. Many people dey complain about the VFX, wey one person say e look like the unskippable ad before mobile game trailer. Others dey talk about changes for storylines and characterization from the original.
Also, since this be live-action, the supposedly 12-year-old Aang don grow about one foot since last season, because star Gordon Cormier dey grow up fast. The animated series never get that problem. Avatar no go become one of the best Netflix adaptations for their roster, but e do better than Cowboy Bebop. However, e no reach the reception of the ultra-faithful and beautifully crafted One Piece.
Season 2 finale set up season 3 with plenty twists and cliffhangers. Episode 7, “Something Broken”, dey all about setting the characters for their endgame directions. Aang and Iroh enter Ba Sing Se through secret Avatar door to rescue others. Katara and Zuko get heart-to-heart about his past, and she offer to heal am, but time no allow.
Zuko fight Azula to near-stalemate, but she whisper sweet nothings about potential redemption. Toph meet her mother for what look like reasonable conversation, but e turn out to be ruse. Her mother poison Toph tea and kidnap am from Ba Sing Se. Toph wake up for bending-proof metal box, but she use earthbending to warp the thing, wey she believe be invention of metalbending.
Katara and Aang face Azula and Zuko, wey shock everyone because Zuko switch sides again. E clear say e be long con, but e no go confirm until next season. Azula massively overpowered, and both Aang and Katara together no fit take am down, especially when Dai Li arrive. Katara end up surrounded, Aang on back foot.
With no other option, Aang activate Avatar State and channel ancestors to fight back. He easily overpower Zuko and Azula, but he make crucial mistake of hesitating instead of taking Azula life. She take opportunity to hit am with lightning, wey seemingly kill am. If Aang die while for Avatar State, the cycle go end and he lose connection to all previous Avatars.
Katara rush to Aang side and attempt to heal am, giving Azula chance to strike am down, but Iroh arrive to fight her off so Katara and Aang fit escape. Iroh arrested and taken away, no talk to or even look at Zuko. Katara escape through ceiling and hook back up with Sokka, Sai, Toph, and Appa.
Season 2 end with Katara trying and seemingly failing to revive Aang using water from Spirit Oasis. Even though he briefly flicker back to life, he expire again immediately, implying say he gone for good. Season 3 go come soon and maybe go pull things out for the end.
