Atiku Abubakar win di party primary wey dem hold on May 25, 2026, with 1,846,370 votes. Amaechi come second with 504,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen get 177,120 votes. Since di primary, Atiku don dey try to get support from odas wey contest, even visit Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen.
Dis decision come at a time when a court order INEC to deregister ADC because di party fail to meet di requirement of winning at least 25% of contested seats for di 2023 election. Some analysts dey wonder wetin dis ticket go mean for di party, especially after Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso leave for NDC, wey many believe don weaken ADC.
Di party say Amaechi get strong support for di primary, wey he come second, and he get experience for government. Dem believe say im experience go help strengthen Atiku leadership and expand di party reach across Nigeria. ADC also say di Atiku-Amaechi ticket go unite different regions and communities for Nigeria.
Political analyst Dr. Kabiru Sufi say dis na di best choice wey remain for ADC if dem want to get support from di south-south region. He point out say di oda candidates wey remain no too many, and since Amaechi and Atiku contest, di party need to pick running mate from south-south to attract votes from dat area.
Professor Abubakar Kari, anoda political scientist, say di candidates fit do well, especially for Igbo community for south-south, because Amaechi get years of political experience. He also note say Amaechi ethnic background fit affect di ticket, as e dey proud of im heritage. Kari advise dem to focus on developing policies wey go make Nigerians trust dem.
Atiku Abubakar na veteran politician wey don dey active since 1989. He serve as vice president from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. Dis na im fourth time to contest for president, though he don contest for primaries many times. He never hold any major government position since im vice presidency, but e remain a key opposition figure.
Rotimi Amaechi born on May 27, 1965 for Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area for Rivers State. He study for University of Port Harcourt, wey he get degree for English for 1987. He serve as governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and as Minister of Transport under President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023. Im political career start for di Third Republic, wey he become secretary of NRC for Ikwerre. Later, he become special assistant to Governor Peter Odili. For 1999, dem elect am as member of Rivers State House of Assembly, wey he even become speaker until 2007.
For 2007, he win PDP primary for governor, but di party change im name. He go to Supreme Court, wey reject di party action and confirm am as winner. Dem swear am in on October 26, 2007. He contest for APC presidential ticket for 2023 but later withdraw for Tinubu.
