Former Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari don describe di arrest warrant wey Senate Committee on Public Accounts issue against am as something wey shock am well well.
Inside one letter wey e write to di committee chairman, Kyari explain say e don already tell dem say e no fit appear before dem because e dey go hospital for outside Nigeria.
E say: ‘I refer to di news of di arrest warrant wey dem issue against me during di proceedings of your esteemed Committee today, June 10, 2026. I dey deeply shocked by di issuance of di warrant.’
Kyari tok say e don formally notify di committee for one letter wey e write on May 11, 2026, say e dey receive medical treatment for outside Nigeria. According to am, e also show say e ready to honour di committee invitation as soon as e come back, and e offer to answer any urgent question through im legal representatives.
E add: ‘I also express my willingness to honour di Committee invitation as soon as I return to Nigeria. I wish to reiterate say I remain very willing and ready to honour di invitation of di Committee and to appear before dem once I return to di country.’
Di former NNPCL chief deny di allegation say e deliberately ignore di Senate invitation. E maintain say e never receive any subsequent summons before dem issue di warrant. E state: ‘However, I wish to respectfully state say I neva receive nor sighted di said invitation. If di invitation reach me, I for gladly honour am.’
Kyari explain say im current health condition no allow am to appear physically before di committee at dis time. E urge lawmakers to direct any question or request for clarification through im legal team as e dey continue treatment abroad. E assure di committee of im full cooperation for di investigation and pledge to appear in person once im health permit.
Defending im tenure at di national oil company, Kyari say im management team transform NNPCL from loss-making organisation to commercially viable and profitable entity. E add say all transactions wey dem do during im administration dey properly documented and remain available for scrutiny.
E say: ‘I remain deeply grateful to my country for di opportunity wey dem give me to serve with utmost diligence and commitment.’
Di Senate Committee on Public Accounts don issue di arrest warrant after Kyari fail to appear before dem during one scheduled sitting. Di committee dey investigate di financial records and transactions of NNPCL, including issues relating to over ₦210 trillion wey dem allegedly dey review. Di motion for di warrant na Senator Victor Umeh wey move am and Senator Adams Oshiomhole wey second am.
But Kyari maintain say e no get anything to hide and e remain committed to assist di Senate for dia investigation.
