Commonwealth must turn advantage into real economic gains

Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, don yarn say di organization must transform im unique economic advantages into investment, jobs and sustainable growth. She talk say di Commonwealth fit position as a trusted network for business and trade for dis uncertain global economy.

She yarn dis tory for Lagos State Government and di Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) event. She explain say di strength of di Commonwealth no just dey for shared history but for practical advantages wey connect im 56 member countries today.

“We share language, legal traditions, business practices, education systems, institutions and deep people-to-people ties,” she talk. “These connections are commercial assets. They reduce friction. They build trust. They lower risk.” She call dis di “Commonwealth Advantage,” with trade between member countries costing about 21 per cent less than between non-member states.

But she warn say advantage alone no guarantee prosperity. “But advantage, by itself, is not enough,” she tok. For a world wey trade patterns dey shift, technology dey disrupt, and competition for investment dey grow, countries must focus on building confidence and creating environments wey go attract long-term capital.

“For investors, the question is no longer where the highest return is, only. It is also: where is the trust? Where is the talent? Where is the market? Where is the regulatory confidence?” she ask.

She highlight di Commonwealth Secretariat work to support member states through digital trade, investment facilitation, regulatory connectivity and access to finance, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. She also talk about di importance of partnerships wey go translate opportunity into real results.

“We need execution. We need scale. We need confidence,” she conclude.

Dis vision go continue to shape discussions at di Commonwealth Business Forum 2026, wey di Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), di Government of Antigua and Barbuda and di Commonwealth Secretariat dey organise from 2 to 4 November 2026 during di Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Leaders from government and business go gather to advance trade, investment and economic cooperation across di Commonwealth.
