Gary Neville don yarn say Elliot Anderson be di “outstanding” midfield candidate wey Manchester United suppose sign dis summer, after di boy show im quality for Old Trafford on Sunday.
Di Sky Sports pundit, wey be former Man Utd captain, tok say im former club need at least five signings for di summer transfer window to beef up di squad.
Neville talk say replacing Casemiro go be one of Man Utd biggest challenges dis summer, after di Brazilian bin do im emotional farewell for Old Trafford.
Speaking on di Gary Neville Podcast after Man Utd final home game of di season, Neville admit say di club now face huge task to replace di experience, leadership and physical presence wey Casemiro bring to Michael Carrick side.
“Manchester United now need a 25 to 26-year-old version of Casemiro, but di problem be say e dey cost you £100m nowadays,” Neville admit. “Im heading and aerial ability for both boxes go very difficult to replace.”
Neville reflect on di circumstances around Casemiro arrival for Old Trafford, claiming say di midfielder bin sign during period of panic for di club recruitment strategy.
“Casemiro was signed in a panic after di Brentford defeat away from home,” Neville explain. “Dem overpay and dem overpay on salary. Manchester United today for dia current format and leadership no go go and do anoda deal like dat.”
Neville also praise Casemiro impact during di second half of di campaign, believing say di midfielder play huge role for helping Carrick guide United back into di Champions League.
“For dis last six months, e don exceptional for terms of getting Manchester United into di Champions League,” Neville say. “Dem go miss am from personality and character perspective, physicality, aerial presence and e good on di ball as well. Casemiro bring some value because e like captain really. You no find many players like dat.”
Neville believe say Elliot Anderson go be di outstanding midfield candidate to replace Casemiro at Manchester United dis summer, after di boy impress for Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
Neville praise Anderson ability to play forward, contribute creatively and handle di intensity of Premier League football.
“Manchester United need to look at players wey either very young and get hunger to grow or Premier League-ready players, and Elliot Anderson be dat,” Neville say, even though e admit say e no go be easy bargain to strike to prise am from Forest.
“Wetin I like about Anderson be di fact say e look forward and e contribute. Di two crosses for di goals bin exceptional.”
Neville explain say Anderson willingness to play on di front foot be wetin make am stand out from many modern midfielders, arguing say too many players dey content to keep possession instead of taking risks for central areas.
“I see too many crabs playing central midfield. You no fit get too many people wey dey play five-yard passes back and sideways. You need to put players for there wey go look forward and punch passes through di lines and get dia head up. Elliot Anderson fit do dat. E fit take set-pieces. So for me, e go be outstanding candidate to come here. But if you believe wetin you hear, Manchester City also want am, so if e be straight fight between di two Manchester clubs, e go interesting to see who e choose.”
Neville believe say di players Manchester United sign from Premier League clubs last summer don largely work, with dat experience helping dem adapt quicker to di demands of playing at Old Trafford.
“If you look at Man Utd recruitment last summer, dem bin sign younger players from outside, but dia big signings bin Premier League-ready players like Mbeumo and Cunha. Dem don get difficult moments dis season, but I never watch dem and think say dem no belong for a Man Utd shirt. Dem keep going, dem get fight and persistence. Manchester United forwards get to work hard, look hungry to get on di ball and run forward.”
Neville also warn say Man Utd go need significant reinforcements dis summer if dem want to compete on multiple fronts next season, following dia return to di Champions League.
“Michael Carrick don get squad at di moment wey be paper-thin. If two or three players get injured, e go fall apart quite quickly. Di squad go come under great stress playing three times a week. Dere be some players out dere wey be injury prone, some players wey fatigue more and e just inevitable.”
Neville believe say central midfield suppose be priority area for United dis summer, alongside defensive reinforcements.
“Dem need two top central midfield players. Dat be di absolute unequivocal. E [Carrick] go need four or five more players minimum, of really high quality wey reliable, consistent, and Premier League ready. Dem don go and get two or three more around dat to beef up di squad.”
With Champions League football returning to Old Trafford next season, United now face crucial summer window as Carrick dey look to build squad wey fit compete on multiple fronts.
Meanwhile, di news say Pep Guardiola dey expected to leave City at di end of di season, and dat uncertainty dey surround di blue half of Manchester. Recruitment plans wey once feel inevitable suddenly look fragile. For di first time in nearly a decade, dere be questions about identity for City. Enzo Maresca, di name almost certain to succeed Pep, dey exciting but no be as exciting as Pep once bin be to di City fans.
Dat uncertain wind fit open door for di oda side of Manchester. While City face di challenge of replacing di most influential coach of di modern era, Manchester United finally fit get something wey dem don lack for years: a clear footballing vision. And at di centre of dat vision na Michael Carrick.
For midfielder like Anderson, Carrick represent something uniquely attractive. Few coaches for English football understand tempo, positioning and midfield intelligence di way di former United playmaker do. Carrick reputation among young English players dey grow quietly inside football circles, no as celebrity manager, but as developer of players. Take Kobbie Mainoo for instance, for whom di only term wey come to mind na reborn.
At City, Anderson fit become anoda elite component for system still dey search for im next architect. At United, e fit become di face of an entirely new era. Di symbolism go impossible to ignore. One club dey enter uncertainty after di end of dynasty. Di oda dey attempt rebuild around youth, identity and English talent. For many ways, Guardiola leaving fit no simply reshape City future. E fit reshape United future as well. And if Elliot Anderson ultimately walk into Old Trafford instead of di Etihad, di moment people go look back on fit no be di transfer itself. E fit be di day Guardiola decide to leave Manchester.
