Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) don barricade Ife-Ede road on Tuesday morning, dey protest against the new transportation system wey First Lady Oluremi Tinubu introduce. The students say di system wey she donate 50 CNG buses and 30 tricycles for campus no dey work well, and e don make commuting hard for dem.
According to student sources wey talk with FIJ, di new system don cause delays and queues, and di vehicles wey dey available—80 in total—no fit serve OAU population wey pass 30,000. One law student, Hammed, say di vehicles no enough, and students dey queue for hours under sun before dem go get bus.
An Agriculture student also complain say di new system don affect dem financially. Dem increase bus price to farm from N600 to N800, and di old town-gboro buses wey dem expel used to wait for dem till dem finish dia work. Now dem dey stress and spend extra money.
The Students’ Union don declare 72-hour lecture boycott to protest di discomfort. Di union president, Adelani David, say dem demand either make management bring back di old transport system or add more buses to di existing ones. Dem also say all academic activities should stop until transport issue resolve.
When FIJ call OAU spokesperson Abiodun Olanrewaju, he claim say di problem only dey happen during rush hours, and e compare am to traffic for Lagos and Ibadan. He say no transport system dey perfect during rush hours.
FIJ also message First Lady spokesperson Busola Kukoyi for comment, but she no respond yet. Di students say dem go continue protest until dia demands meet.
