Chai! E be like say wahala don dey brew for our airports o! Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) don plan to increase cargo tariff, and cargo agents no dey smile at all. Dem don gather talk say if FAAN no commot hand for this increase wey fit start for February 2, 2026, dem go protest.
According to gist wey una sabi, FAAN dey move from N7 per kilogram to N25. Na serious jump be that! E no go sweet for business wey dey struggle already. Cargo agents dey fear say this tariff increase go make cargo traffic dey fall for Naija, and e go make things hard for everybody wey dey import and export goods.
Inside Murtala Muhammed Airport for Lagos, dem don already dey feel the tension as FAAN officials don confirm say dem ready to start the new tariff. One FAAN oga wey no wan show face talk say, ‘All structures don dey in place. We go start the tariff adjustment as dem don approve am.’ Wetin dem mean by dat na say dem no dey listen to wetin anyone talk.
But cargo agents dey shout say this timing no make sense. Dem don dey warn say this decision go just scatter the already shaky businesses for the country. ‘We just dey appeal say make dem reconsider this action, e fit affect everybody for economy,’ one agent talk. Na true talk be dat!
FAAN say di tariff increase come because dem don do some internal reforms to improve how things dey run and to boost their revenue collection. But agents no gree hear word. Dem dey feel say if FAAN fit carry this kind increase at this time, wetin go happen to them wey dey already dey struggle to survive?
Even the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders don join their voice with cargo agents dem, dey express their vex say FAAN no sabi wetin im dey do. Dem talk say dis increase go just put more pressure on businesses wey no fit handle am again. Frank Ogunojemite, wey be president of di Association, talk say e no dey happy with di decision because e no dey match with wetin dey happen for ground.
Ogunojemite also talk say dis kind increase dey against di advice of key industry people. ‘As e be now, we no see any improvement for di cargo infrastructures, so wetin be di reason to increase? Na nonsense!’ he talk.
Segun Musa, wey be Deputy President of di National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, don also vow say dem go use any legal means to fight this wahala. He talk say ‘We go meet dem tomorrow, and we go discuss how to balance wetin go work for everybody, because dis no be just about us.’ Musan also dey complain say dem dey intimidate dem, say dem don even send threat say dem go demolish their secretariat for their opposition to di proposed charges. E no go better if dem try am o!
