Naija Hospitals: Why Death Don Spoil Our Healthcare System

My people, e don burst as we dey talk about this wahala wey don take over our hospitals for Naija. Na real matter o! Every corner you turn, person dey mourn loved ones wey just waka go. Wetin dey happen sef? I dey feel say death don turn to our new neighbor, no lie!

Recently, my guy don dey yarn about the rising rate of death for our hospitals. Him say, ‘E be like say na every second, person dey die.’ Na true talk, because as I dey scroll for Facebook, na only mourning people I dey see. And the koko wey dey sweet my stomach pass na how people dey point finger at hospitals, dey call dem out for negligence wey dey result in these heart-wrenching deaths.

Just last week, we hear say Chimamanda Adichie’s son wey be just 21-months-old die for private hospital for Lagos due to alleged medical negligence. Na heavy accusation o! And as expected, the hospital don deny say dem do anything wrong. The family don even carry the case go court. Lagos State Government don waka come join the matter, dem don order investigation. Na serious matter!

Wetin we go say? Adichie and others wey don gather courage to speak out deserve big kudos. Dey no just dey fight for justice for their own, but dey dey also try make sure say this kind wahala no go happen again. E mean say we all fit learn from their pain.

As I dey read the sad story, e be like say I dey read one of Chimamanda fiction books. But the sad reality be say na no be only this private hospital dey raise eyebrow. Even government hospitals sef dey follow dem with plenty sad stories of avoidable deaths. Just last year, one lawyer don bring palm wine, as him dey talk about how him wife die after childbirth for specialist hospital. E claim say dem neglect her. Na wah!

Peeps, this one wey happen to Obinna Ihemedu na another level of jinx. Him cousin die for government hospital wey him claim dem miss acute appendicitis diagnosis. Na serious matter. How person go dey discharged with such situation? My brother talk say the ‘anyhowness’ for our health care dey vex am. True talk! We must open our eyes, because this problem no dey affect only the rich. E dey touch everybody!

Another one wey wey dey pain me na the way hospitals dey operate like say dem no care. One Mr. Ethelbert say him step-brother die because dem no provide correct care. Dem even allow him corpse dey mingle without gloves for mortuary. Abeg! This one do pass the level of madness.

Dr. Olisa Agbakoba don talk say we need urgent o! overhaul for our health system. Na true talk be this one. E call the medical negligence for Naija a national emergency, and I no fit argue am. Dis one no be play o! People no suppose dey die like this just cos we dey play for health system balance.

This story don reach plenty, and e no dey end for one person wahala. We dey hear plenty complaints, but wetin we dey do? Demand accountability, my people! We need to hold hospitals, doctors, and regulators responsible. We dey always say make we leave everything to God, but e don too much. We fit do better!

We need to jaga-jaga our health system before e too late. Na we all go join hand to ensure say this type of tragedies no go continue. As e dey pain us, e go better for our healthcare if we push for reform and make sure say people dey follow the right procedure. If we really value our lives, na so e go dey!
