Corin Solarin, daughter of the late human rights guru, Dr Tai Solarin, talk am say her papa get vision wey no be small. Na him carry practical skills join academic gists since 1956!
Corin no just dey blow grammar for press briefing; she dey talk serious matter. She yan say na wetin make Mayflower School stand out be say dem dey push students to learn trades like plumbing, wiring and even poultry farming. E be like say her papa no be small mind man; him dey foresee things wey we dey see now dey come back for school curriculum.
She drop for ground say ‘seventy years ago, my papa don set the pace wey we dey follow now. Education wey just dey on paper no go fit carry person go anywhere.’ You fit imagine how e go be as students dey learn how to do things with their hand? Na so we go sabi say dem fit build house by themselves, handle plumbing, and even cook well well!’
Wale Abdul, the President of Mayflower Old Students Association (MOSA), also dey flex him gist. E talk say all dis celebration no be just about school anniversary, na also to honour the vision of Dr Solarin and him wife, Sheila. Dem turn jungle to citadel of learning, and now, thousands of students wey don pass through dis school don dey make sense for life, both for Naija and abroad!
Dem even plan to commission 14 projects wey go upgrade the school facilities, including staff quarters and Tai Solarin Hall. Plus, dem go give the old couple posthumous award and even honour five past MOSA presidents. Na serious matter, my people!
During de one-week celebration, you go see inter-house sports, dem go distribute customized exercise books, and dem go get public lecture wey dem go call ‘Making Informed Choices Towards a Greater Future’. You fit feel say dem dey serious about the future of education for Naija.
As we dey celebrate all dis achievements, make we remember say education wey no carry practical skills no be the complete package.
