Na serious matter wey just land for ground as Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) don burst enter court wahala with state governors and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Dem dey raise question about di billions of naira wey dem don chop as security votes since dis May 29, 2023, but e be like say nothing don change for di insecurity wey dey face di country.
Hear dis! According to di information wey SERAP drop, dem say despite di money wey dey flow like water into security votes, di level of insecurity for different states and di FCT dey grow like pepper wey no go ripe. E be like say dis matter no fit continue like dis, as plenty people don suffer from mass killings for Benue and other states, and di government no fit explain wetin happen to di money.
Di lawsuit wey dem file for Federal High Court for Abuja last Friday na FHC/ABJ/CS/95/2026, and na serious wahala wey dey brew o! SERAP wan make dem governors and di FCT minister come show us how dem take spend di security votes dem don collect since last year. Dem also dey demand say we go see all di plans wey dey in place to make sure say di security matter no dey suffer again.
E be like say over N400 billion dey allocated every year for security, and for 2026, at least 10 governors don budget about N140 billion just for dis security matter. But dem no fit give clear report on how dem dey spend di money and wetin dem dey use am do, and dat one dey vex SERAP well well.
For di statement wey SERAP release, dem talk say Nigerians deserve to sabi how dia money dey take work for dem. Dem no wan make dis public funds wey suppose protect people turn contest for personal gain. Na wetin dem talk: ‘Nigerians suppose know wetin dey happen with dia money! Abeg, dis level of secrecy no gree!’
If you dey follow di gist, you go realize say dis matter dey cause plenty troubles for people wey dey suffer under dis fierce insecurity. Di right group remind us say dis every year na di same story we dey hear, and dem serious select few dey turn dem ears to make dem no hear di cry of di people.
Na im dem come talk say dem Constitution no support dis kind of hiding. Democracy no supposed dey operate like say dem don close eye. SERAP come mention di Supreme Court wey don tok say Freedom of Information Act dey apply to all levels of government including those wey dey collect security votes.
E no matter how dem go try cover am, we go sabi how di money dey enter and how e dey waka. Dem go still need to show how dem take spend am, or else dem go dey face serious wahala for di public eye. E no dey even matter if some operational details dey secret because we gree say some things fit dey confidential for national security, but suppose dey basic information dey clear, na dat one we dey expect.
As dissension dey rise over dis security vote matter, we dey hear say di economy dey face shakings. World Bank even classify Nigeria as economy wey dey fragile and affected by conflict, and e connect di increase in insecurity to poverty wey dey choke people and dem no fit get food to chop.
