This small insect wey dey size like grain of rice don come take over two Wildlife Management Areas for Cape Cod. E dey cause wahala for our pine forests, killing trees faster than we fit blink. Imagine, tens of thousands of acres done dey turn to graveyard for pines for New Jersey and Long Island, and now Massachusetts don start to see dem spider web!
According to MassWildlife, this pest no just come out from anywhere. Dem suspect sey na wind from Long Island Sound carry dem come. E be like sey dem dey party now, because from 2015 when dem first see small sha, dem don explode since 2023! Them dey kill trees for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket like sey dem dey on a mission.
Omo, wetin make dem beetle dey so dangerous be sey dem no dey dey alone. When one don enter ur tree, na im be say many no go dey far behind. Dem dey gather together, dey attack the resin defenses of the tree and don bury eggs underneath the bark. After small time, new beetle go show face, and before you know am, na so entire forest go dey die.
As they say, prevention na beta cure, MassWildlife dey hurry remove infested trees and create firebreaks. But this work dey tough. Chemical treatments no dey really work, so na just remove the trees wey don catch the beetle wey dem fit use to stop wahala. Wetin dey cause dem problems? Overgrown forests! Dense pitch pine stands wey no see fire for years don make the place ripe for this invaders. This dey also dey increase the risk for wildfire wey fit scatter everything!
MassWildlife don already restore about 3,000 acres of pine forests statewide, but as e be so, more than 100,000 acres still dey at risk. Na why dem dey run event for public to come see wetin dem dey do. People go fit learn how dem fit manage forests better before these beetles go scatter everywhere.
No be only MassWildlife dey fight this battle. Plenty organizations don dey come together to help restore pine barrens wey dey on Joint Base Cape Cod and other state forests. Our Betters dey work hard to make sure sey waste and contamination no go turn everywhere into serious problem. The fight against the southern pine beetle no go end anytime soon, but we fit make sure sey these forests dey healthy and ready to fight back.
If anything, the arrival of this beetle don show say we gatz to take forest management seriously, before we lose plenty of our beautiful pine forests here in Massachusetts.
