Na wah! Canada don chop plenty Naija people for deportation table. Between January and October 2025, dem don send 366 Naija citizens back home! E be like say immigration enforcement don turn to hustle wey dem no fit control again.
According to wetin Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) talk, 974 Nigerians dey wait for their turn to pack their load and head back home as dem dey classified under ‘removal in progress’. This na serious gbege, no be small.
Now, make we break am down – this deportation matter no be joke, as Nigeria don step back into the top 10 deported countries for 2025 after waka comot for 2023 and 2024. Na so dem don gather 366 deportations, wey represent increase wey reach 8% from di 2019 figure when dem removed 339 Nigerians. As e be so, Canada dey show say dem serious for dis matter, with about 400 foreign nationals dey dey sent back weekly. E don reach that level wey dem never see for over 10 years!
CBSA don reveal say plenty of di deportees be failed refugee claimants, wey make up about 83% of dem. Wetin mean say dem try apply for asylum, but di answer na big NO. Di rest wey dey come from criminal cases dey represent just about 4% of di deportees. Na serious wah!
Dem also drop one big money ($78m) to carry out 18,048 deportations within 2024-2025 fiscal year alone. Na only 30.5 million Canadian dollars dem go use for di next three years just to boost dis removal work. E no easy at all.
Dem don also talk say if Bill C-12, wey dem sabi call ‘di border bill’, pass, e fit lead to more deportations. One of di clauses wey dey inside na say plenty people go fit get permanent bans from filing refugee claims for Canada. So wetin dis one go mean for Nigerians wey dey try look for better life?
Even with all dis wahala, Canada still dey shine as one major target for plenty Nigerians wey dey seek better education and economic opportunities. Between 2016 and 2021, more than 40,000 Nigerians don run enter Canada, making dem di largest African migrant group and di fifth-largest group of immigrants wey land for Canada.
Di numbers no lie; within di first four months of 2024, 6,600 Nigerians don get permanent resident status. E mean say Naija people still dey find their way, even as dem dey carry dem back home. Between 2005 and 2024, a whopping 71,459 Nigerians don become Canadian citizens. Na serious testimony!
