My people, e don reach our notice say di Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) don dey vex well well for di way some employers dey treat workers for shipping sector. Dem dey call am casualisation, and e no be small matter.
For one statement wey dem drop, di Head of Media for MWUN, John Ikemefuna, yarn say di current labour practice wey some employers dey carry come na just like slave-master mentality, where profit matter pass human dignity.
Di President of di Shipping Branch, Olufemi Abass, no gree carry last. He talk say many of dis employers dey bypass labour regulations, as dem dey outsource core duties to third-party contractors wey dey offer workers small change, no be joke.
“Wetin dem dey do na joke. Dem dey outsource workers to contractors wey go pay dem peanuts. This one no just dey sweet. Na like dis dem wan take turn workers to casual labour. Na serious work wey dey happen,” Abass talk as he dey clear the air for dis matter.
Abass no dey play as e talk say di cruelty wey dey happen for shipping sector don too much. E say, dis kind of behaviour dey go against labour laws and na so dem dey justify wickedness, just to dey reduce union presence for maritime industry.
“This level wey dem dey do so dey show say we dey enter dangerous zone. We no go allow dem continue with dis manipulation wey dey try exploit workers. E no go happen,” he vow.
Abass also point out say dis practises don dey make workers lose their permanent job, as dem dey think say e go save dem cost and bring big profits, but na wahala for di workers. E emphasise say dem dey neglect better work policies wey dey protect workers’ rights.
“Union go act fast to stop dis nonsense wey dey happen. We go carry dis matter go reach di top level of di union, and we go take stricter action,” he clarify.
Casualisation na wetin dey happen wey make employers dey hire people on short terms, no be permanent employment. Dis one dey cause job insecurity, low pay, poor welfare, and so many problems for maritime workers.
Over di years, dese casual workers don dey face serious wahala. Dismissals without compensation dey happen anyhow, and dem no fit even organise well or access pension and better wages. Di union don dey shout say make dem no allow dis casualisation continue.
Na time to wake up be dis o! Employers and policymakers suppose end dis matter quick quick, if dem really care about the workers wey dey toil day and night to keep our waters moving.
