Abeg, make we gist about wetin dey happen for prison matter for Naija as we dey enter 2026.
According to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), current stats show say 27,416 inmates don collect convocation, while 50,703 dey outside dey wait for trial. Na serious overcrowding wahala we dey face oo! All these ‘Awaiting Trial Persons’ don dey cause gbas gbos for our correctional facilities, wey dey burst government budget, as dem dey spend N1,125 daily just to chop for each inmate.
Chai, imagine the total bill wey government dey pay for all this waiting people! Many of dem wey dey hold for prison dey face serious charges like murder, armed robbery, and culpable homicide. Na serious gbege, una go understand say these cases no dey run like wetin we dey watch for Nollywood! E take time for justice to take leg, and this na why dem dey waste away for prison.
Back in January 2025, Sylvester Nwakuche, wey be Controller-General for NCoS, talk say dem dey hold 48,932 Awaiting Trial Persons. But fast forward to December, e don increase to 50,703! E be like say dem no fit find solution wey go quicken the trial process, as dem still dey plan for meetings with the Attorney-General and other key players.
Just recently, Nwakuche come yan say make the prison personnel no form any connection with the inmates. He talk say e fit cause more wahala like overcrowding and slow trial if dem no behave. Any officer wey no respect this warning go face serious yawa oo!
Na so we dey here, dey hope say our judicial system go fit find better way to manage all these inmates matter because e don dey affect many lives, and the money too dey waka anyhow. Make we dey follow this story, o, no be small.
