Zulum declares zero tolerance for thuggery in Borno

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has declared zero tolerance for the activities of political thugs, commonly referred to as “Ecomog” in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.

Zulum made the statement Monday in Maiduguri during a meeting with representatives of the thugs summoned to Government House.

Mr Zulum said his administration would not continue to tolerate the nuisance the thugs continued to create at gatherings, including burial, wedding and baptism ceremonies.

“Some of you are always at the airport to disturb people while others even travel to Abuja to be a nuisance,” Zulum noted.

He reminded the thugs that the government has presented them with many empowerment programs, but they have not seized the opportunity to be self-reliant.

“You keep bothering people for money every day, who says giving you money is essential?

“In fact, any politician of the commissioner, member of the State Assembly, member of the National Assembly who continues to associate with you will lose my support,” Zulum warned.

Also speaking, State Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Kaka Shehu said the government has seen an increase in theft and burglary cases and is committed to dealing with anyone or group whose activities contribute to insecurity in Maiduguri and its surroundings.

Borno Police Commissioner Abdu Umar and DSS State Director Manir Mamman, who also addressed the meeting, warned the thugs and advised them to fine another job or risk arrest and prosecution.
