Zambia government official clears Chinese company of employee abuse allegations

A government official in Chongwe district in Zambia’s Lusaka Province on Tuesday refuted reports of employee abuse by a Chinese company in the district.

Chongwe district commissioner, Robster Mwanza made the observation when he visited an agribusiness company, Chenguang Biotech Zambia Limited in Ntandabale ward of Chongwe district to verify the report by a whistleblower. He was accompanied by security personnel and a labour officer.

He, however, found out that the company was actually complying contrary to the reports. He, therefore, commended the company for its willingness to comply with the labour laws in the country.

Mwanza later told Xinhua that he was impressed with the company’s willingness to obey the labour laws. He also noted that the company was willing to continue obeying the COVID-19 preventive measures. He said that he did not see any reason why the reputation of the firm must be dented based on rumours.

He said that he was ready to recommend the closure of any firm that was violating the law, but stated that the case was not so with Chenguang Biotech Zambia Limited.

According to his findings, the company only decided to rotate the workers in shifts so that they work in periods of two weeks and lodge at the farm during the two weeks when they are on duty. He said that this was a good initiative which was meant to ensure that the COVID-19 spread is slowed or stopped.

He, therefore, advised other firms both local and foreign to emulate the level of compliance at Chenguang Biotech Zambia Limited. He said that this was key in ensuring that the companies remain in good books with the government.
