Chief Onwurah Agility, founder, Nollywood Yam Festival, says that the festival has recorded achievements in the past 10 years in promoting national unity and peaceful coexistence in the country.
Agility had this to say on Saturday night at the 10th anniversary of the Nollywood Yam Festival and Award Night in Abuja.
According to him, the meaning of this festival is unity because many people eat yam regardless of their tribe or ethnic origin.
The three-decade-old actor said, “The importance of the Nollywood Yam Festival is unity and we dedicate this event (being the 10th edition) to peace in Nigeria.
“We started this festival 10 years ago to make sure our young people understand something of our culture, heritage and values.”
According to him, this year’s festival is dedicated to the peaceful coexistence of the nation.
“If you look around you, you will see Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and other ethnic groups. Everyone is happy and I want to keep it that way in Nigeria.
“Nigeria is one country and Nigerians are one. We are all Nigerians. We need to understand the importance of unity in our diversity to take Nigeria to the next level,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the festival would continue to unite Nigerians and move the country forward.
In his remarks, the national president of the Screen Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, said that the festival is a symbol of unity.
Rollas described yams as a common food that is eaten regardless of tribal or ethnic background.
According to him, this festival has really brought us together as a people.
“You can see our traditional rulers representing the Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba communities at this festival,” he said.
