World Food Day: Veterinary Council tasks Nigerians on healthy diet

The Acting Registrar, Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Dr Fadipe Oladotun, on Friday urged Nigerians to always eat healthy foods and shy away from artificial food substances capable of disrupting the body system.

Oladotun made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja to mark the 2020 World Food Day.

While stressing the need for healthier eating, he advised Nigerians to use the World Food Day to reflect on things that they ate.

World Food Day is celebrated every year around the World on Oct. 16, in honour of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945.

The theme for the 2020 World Food Day entitled “Grow, nourish, sustain together. Our actions are our future’’.

Oladotun also emphasised the need for people to always ensure the safety of their foods, saying that healthy foods guaranteed healthy society.

According to him, it is important that we look to the direction of food safety so that the food we eat will be the ones we are proud of.

“You are what you consume; a lot of people are consuming what is not healthy for them.

“Sicknesses and diseases sometime don’t just manifest in one day; it is a process.

“So, when you keep taking these things gradually it will weigh you down.

“We should eat healthy, we should eat balanced diet, we should eat natural foods and look away from artificial food substances that have the tendency to disrupt our body system,’’ he said.

Oladotun, however, expressed the council’s determination to ensure that only healthy animals and their bye products entered food supply chain to guarantee food safety in Nigeria.

“If we are able to cut the circle of diseases within the animal population then they will not get to the human population,’’ he said.
