Works ministry to revive Bridge Maintenance Unit–Fashola

By Ikenna Uwadileke
Works and Housing Minister Babatunde Fashola said the ministry will relaunch its Bridge Maintenance and Rehabilitation Unit to ensure efficient maintenance of bridges across the country.

The minister said this in Abuja at NANForum, the flagship interview program of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said maintaining public infrastructure is part of the federal government’s strategy to improve the human condition and create jobs.

“Maintenance is also part of this strategy for improving the human condition and creating work and employment.

“Divers work under several of our bridges. These are people who were previously unemployed.

“This ministry developed the maintenance policy, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved it and we budgeted for it in collaboration with Budget Finance and National Planning and the National Assembly.

“Now it’s having an impact on people. So wherever you go, be it Chanchangi Bridge or Eko Bridge, you see people working.

“We intend to maintain it as we are now revitalizing the Department’s Bridge Maintenance and Rehabilitation Unit; he goes
be reborn.

“There is also an industry related to bridge maintenance; most of the expansion joints and bearings are not made in Nigeria and they are mostly made and we have to import them, ” Fashola said.

The minister also assured the ministry’s commitment to repair bridges in poor condition.

“We already have an inventory of all federal bridges, I think 1701 nationwide and when you say we have bridges in poor condition America has almost 200,000 bridges in various states of disrepair.

“If you want to compare and contrast, just go read President Biden’s infrastructure plan; According to him, you cannot travel five kilometers without hitting a pothole.

“So this is a global problem and we also have to understand that infrastructure, especially our roads, depreciates assets.

“Once you start building and they start to be used, the amortization starts but we’re working on all of these bridges,” he said. (NOPE)
