Work at Third Mainland Bridge critical for its preservation- Fashola

By Ikenna Uwadileke
Works and Housing Minister Babatunde Fashola said additional work continuing under the Third Continental Bridge in Lagos was essential to preserve infrastructure.

The minister, who revealed this in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, said the work would take several months.

Recall that the bridge was reopened on February 28 after having undergone rehabilitation since 2019.

Fashola stressed that work will continue on the substructure despite the bridge reopening to traffic.

“We have completed the work on the superstructure which is the roadway you drive on, we have changed the bearings and the expansion joints and we are now working on the substructure.

“Work continues under the bridge, although people are driving now and think we are done.

“We’re done at the top, people can move; we don’t need to close the bridge.

“Some of the concrete was damaged; part of the reinforcement, the steel shows some of the places where the water splashes there is erosion so we are working on that now.

“We’re going to be there for many months to make sure we preserve the life of this infrastructure because we can’t afford to build a new one,” said Fashola.

NAN reports that the third continental bridge in Lagos was partially closed on July 24, 2020 for another round of rehabilitation work.

The reparation which is expected to last six months has been extended by one month due to protests against EndSARS in Lagos which led to the extension of the completion date from January to February.

The 11.8 km bridge is the longest of the three bridges connecting the island of Lagos to the mainland.

The bridge departs from Oworonshoki which is connected to the Apapa-Oshodi highway and the Lagos-Ibadan highway and ends at the Adeniji Adele interchange on Lagos Island.

Built in 1990, the bridge was considered the longest in Africa until 1996 when the October 6 Bridge in Cairo, Egypt was completed. (NOPE)
