Wolff: Mercedes must change car concept to return to top in F1
After a disappointing qualifying session for the season-opener in Bahrain, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted that it was time to admit his team’s lack of performance and pursue other options.
The team had pushed on with the same car concept as last year, while competitors had adopted the Red Bull downwash solution.
Wolff accepted that the present package is not going to be competitive eventually and that the team needed to sit down with engineers to agree on the development direction to be competitive and determine which decisions to take for the mid and long term.
He suggested a deep analysis of Mercedes’ long-term plan would need to be made after this weekend’s Bahrain GP.
However, he was clear that even if the team opted to pursue an all-new concept, it would not give up on trying to push forward with the current car.
