Pasay City, Philippines – Teresita Ssen “Winwyn” Marquez, who served as first runner-up in the 2025 Miss Universe Philippines pageant held on May 2, describes her placement as an early birthday present and advanced Mother’s Day gift.
Marquez, who turns 33 on May 4, expressed gratitude after her performance at the Mall of Asia Arena. Speaking to media shortly after the coronation, she shared that no big plans were in store for her upcoming celebrations, as she aims to spend quality time with family following the time she dedicated to pageantry.
“I spent so much time here. I sacrificed my time with my family. And I think this time [I have to] give back [to them],” she said, blending English and Filipino. “I’ve done my job. I lived the dream already. And sana na-inspire ko iyong maraming tao na gawin nila iyong gusto nilang gawin (I hope I inspired many to reach for their dreams) without any regrets,” Marquez continued.
Entering the competition as a frontrunner, Marquez had previously made history by becoming the first-ever Asian winner of the Reina Hispanoamericana title in Bolivia in 2017, showcasing her extensive experience in pageantry. Although she did not take home the Miss Universe Philippines crown, which went to Ahtisa Manalo, she felt proud of her 1st runner-up finish.
“I’m super happy, because just by merely joining Miss Universe Philippines, I’m already a winner. And who would have thought, now, a mother is first runner-up [at] Miss Universe Philippines. That’s a good feat already,” Marquez shared with joy.
Her daughter, Luna, who is just three years old, remained awake to cheer for her mother during the competition. Marquez noted, “I’m just super happy na na-meet ko lahat ng girls, kasi tawag nila sa akin ‘Ate’ (I’m just super happy I was able to meet all the girls, because they call me ‘Sis’). I built a relationship with all of them. So I’m really a winner.”
Marquez also had encouraging words for Manalo. “I’m so happy for Ahtisa, deserving, very, very deserving,” she exclaimed as she celebrated the crowning of the new queen.
This year’s pageant showcased 66 candidates, all aiming for the coveted title, with the event being a culmination of many months of hard work and dedication on the part of the contestants. Marquez’s journey has not just been about competition; she emphasizes the significance of balancing motherhood and personal aspirations, aiming to inspire others to pursue their dreams without boundaries.
Reflecting on her experience, Marquez expressed her hope to shift the narrative around motherhood in pageantry. “It was never just the crown. I wanted to show people that motherhood should not mark the end of one’s dreams,” she articulated. “It can be the beginning of something new, something even more meaningful.”
