Winter Storm Causes Concerns for Flooding in Wahpeton
The immediate forecast for Wahpeton does not indicate a complete end to winter weather conditions, including more snow.

The Twin Towns Area is expected to accumulate up to 6 inches of snow by midday Sunday, March 12.

The region is under a blizzard warning, and blizzard conditions are expected to last until late Saturday, March 11.

A winter storm watch is predicted to persist until Sunday afternoon, which can cause snow and blowing snow.
There is a travel advisory due to the low visibility and heavy snowfall rate.
There is also concern over flooding due to the accumulation of snow and the proximity to spring.
The National Weather Service issued its latest flood outlook, which stated that Wahpeton has a probability of experiencing moderate spring flooding between March 13-June 11, 2023.
It is likely for moderate to isolated major spring flooding to occur for the mainstream Red River and southeastern North Dakota tributaries.
Less than normal soil moisture and above normal snowfall and precipitation during the 2022-2023 winter season are key factors.
The timing of snowmelt and the thaw cycle, along with any additional snow or rain, will have the most significant impact on the spring flood risk.
Low temperatures are expected to continue through March, and climate outlooks indicate below-normal temperatures continuing in the spring.
