“The award we received recently is really for our patients whose need is our main duty.

“We shall continue to improve our services and processes until our hospital becomes the destination of choice for all patients in Nigeria.

“It’s even more exciting that this award is coming from the regulator who conducted this assessment and reached this conclusion without even our knowledge.

“There are over a hundred public hospitals in Lagos spanning the local, state and federal governments,” he said.

The medical director commended the staff and management of the hospital for their commitment and selfless services to patients.

“Kudos to our staff, management board, federal Ministry of Health and the federal government for releasing 100 per cent of all health budgets in the last few years,” he said.

What is today known as Federal Medical Centre Ebute-Metta started in November 1964 as a Department of Health Services in the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

It was established exclusively to cater to the health needs of its members of staff and their families.

During the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, due to the federal gvernment‘s privatisation agenda, the Nigerian Railway Hospital was among those shortlisted.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the upgrade of the Nigerian Railway Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre on May 26, 2004.

The hospital was formally handed over to the Federal Ministry of Health on Jan. 31, 2005, as a tertiary healthcare institution and designated as Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta.
