A 35-year-old welder on Monday appeared before an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for allegedly refusing to pay N21,600 owed a lotto agent.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NNN) reports that the defendant, of no fixed address, is facing a one-count charge bordering on breach of the peace.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Ayodeji Omoyeigha, told the court that the defendant, on Jan. 10, at about 8:00 a.m. at No. 5 Lebi Street in Okitipupa, played a lotto of N21,600 from a lotto agent.
“The defendant later said he had no money after playing the lotto and conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace,” he said.
Omoyeigha said that the defendant committed an offence contrary to Section 249 (d), Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
NNN reports that the defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He was granted N50,000 bail by the Chief Magistrate, Mr Dickson Ogunfuyi, in addition to providing a surety in like sum with evidence of a year tax payment.
Ogunfuyi adjourned the case until March 12 for further hearing. (NNN)
