WAPA tasks marriage registrars on effective counselling

Mrs. Cecilia Dada, the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty (WAPA), has charged marriage registrars in the state to render effective counseling to intending couples.

Bolaji-Dada gave the charge at a one-day workshop organized for heads of marriage registries in the state on Wednesday

The theme of the workshop was: “Changing social norms and beliefs, inflicts positive attitude to curb gender-based violence.

She noted that mutual understanding in marriages would check domestic violence in various households.

“This gathering was borne out of the need to deliberate with marriage registrars on the essence of organising effective counselling services for intending couples before solemnisation.

“The social context of violence in Nigeria is based largely on its patriarchal society because violence against a wife is seen as a tool which the husband uses to chastise and improve his wife’s charisma.

“Women’s rights upon marriage especially in sub-Saharan Africa countries are being trampled upon.

“As a ministry, we believe that concerted and collective efforts of all stakeholders will contribute enormously to reducing this anomaly in our dear country,” she said.

Bolaji-Dada urged the participants to take the advantage of the knowledge garnered at the workshop to foster blissful marital homes.

She, however, said that WAPA would remain committed to the well-being of women in the state.

“WAPA is a ministry, socially and technologically empowered to effectively harness the emancipation of women, using various innovative strategies,” Bolaji-Dada added.

Also speaking, Mrs Dorcas Aderemi, a legal practitioner and a facilitator at the workshop called for the inclusion of legal practitioner in the marriage registries across the state.

Aderemi said such inclusion would help intending couples to know the position of the law as regarding statutory marriage.

“Whenever there is going to be counselling for intending couples at marriage registry, a legal practitioner should be part of the team to help them understand the terms and conditions involved.

“So, I am making a recommendation to the Lagos State Government to include legal practitioners as part of all marriage registries counselling team in the state,” she said.

Also, Mrs Modupeola Adebambo, noted that some of the violence that had led to deaths in marriages were avoidable.

Adebambo called for an intensified counselling for intending couples to reduce gender based domestic violence .

“The marriage institution is being threatened and this bring to the question if couples involved in marital crises were adequately counseled.

“So, there is a lot registrars can offer to make a difference by taking time to engage intending couples.

“Some of the violence in marriages that led to deaths are preventable,” she said
