WAPA reiterates commitment to vulnerable women in Lagos

The Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA ) braces another feat, with free Skills training of 300 indigents and vulnerable residents, within Mushin and Odi-Olowo communities, amongst whom were two visually impaired women .

Mrs Bolaji Dada, the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation charged beneficiaries on economic independence during a closing Ceremony held at Odi-Olowo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State,
Dada, urged women of all categories, including those living with disabilities, HIV, widows and retirees, to take advantage of the numerous programmes set aside by the Lagos State Government, to empower themselves.

She said:”As part of activities marking the closing of a 4-week short term skills acquisition programme, we rejoice with you on being part of the Lagos State vision.

“Women empowerment remains one of the focal point of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration and our mandate at the ministry is to ensure no woman, regardless of disability, health or social status is left behind , hence, the programmes covers every woman in Lagos State.

trainings are tuition free, ensuring your status to financial freedom”.

The Commissioner added that starter packs were also distributed on various skills to ensure that the beneficiaries commenced work on what they have learnt.

She said the skills ranges from wig making , hair braiding, make-up and gele tying, tie and dye, catering and confectionaries and garments stoning.

Others are pomade making, insecticide and stove wick, tie and dye, ankara craft, interior decoration amongst others.

‘This program has also been held at other Local Government and 3 LCDAs in the last 2 weeks as; Orile -Agege, Iba LCDA, Oto – Awori LCDA, and Agege Local Government, respectively,” she disclosed.

In the same vein, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Oluyemi Kalesanwo, implored the graduands, to make good use of the skills learnt with view to becoming employers of labour as contributors to the economy.

One of the beneficiaries of the programme, Grace Egbobi, who is visually impaired, extended her gratitude to the Lagos State Government, for putting such an initiative in place and also carrying her and other people living with disabilities along, she enthused.

“I am elated to be part of this initiative, which I never knew I could achieve until I took part in the four weeks training.

“I learnt tie and dye and I can attest to it that this has become a source of income-generating venture for me, with the various designs I have learnt.”

Also present at the event was an official of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, Mr. Ogunleye Taiwo, who took the participants through the various requirement for funds to boost their businesses.

The occasion was marked with the presentation of certicates and starter- packs , for all participants of the training.
