No less than 2,000 veterinarians inside and outside the country are expected in Benin for the 57th annual conference of the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA).

The Association’s national president, Dr Ibrahim Shehu, who revealed this at a press conference in Benin on Sunday, said the conference will be held between October 25 and 29.

He noted that the number of participating doctors was low compared to the more than 10,000 registered body members due to the COVID-19 protocol.

He said that aside from the participating doctors, around 500 exhibitors are expected to showcase their products during the convention.

Shehu said the convention on “Veterinarians and Global Health Security” would be used to address salient issues concerning the profession.

He said some renowned researchers and academics such as Prof Dennis Agbonlahor, former vice-chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, would present a paper at the convention.

The NVMA National President stressed that one of the key issues in the veterinary profession was not properly recognized.

“The government must know that there is no longer a border between veterinarians and human doctors. This is what is now available worldwide.

“In this convention there will be a scientific session which will be taken by experts from all over the world to educate us on the value of a veterinarian; that the government must take into account in formulating public health policy.

“A veterinarian is trained in various aspects of health management and it will also be interesting for you to know that most of the diseases that plague the world today are of animal origin.

“We know that if these diseases are controlled at the animal level, humans will not come into contact with these diseases,” Shehu said.
