I am very attached to the NYSC, says President Buhari

By Ismaila Chafe

President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his deep attachment to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), saying it broadens the horizons of citizens, opens up opportunities and improves understanding of cultural differences.

Malam Garba Shehu, the president’s senior special media assistant, in a statement on Tuesday, said Buhari made his feelings known at his country house, Daura, in Katsina state, when he hosted members of the youth corps serving in Daura.

Members of the youth corps were at the president’s residence in tribute to Eid-el-Kabir.

The president said he had consistently praised the former head of state, retired General Yakubu Gowon, for this initiative, which created more opportunities to unite the country.

Buhari urged members of the youth body to make the most of the opportunity to travel across the country, especially to understand the different climates, cultures, languages and perspectives on life.

“Whenever I meet the former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, as recently as recently, I always congratulate him for the NYSC initiative. The NYSC is spectacular in many ways.

“Some of you have come from Port Harcourt, Lagos and Calabar and now you can feel the heat of Daura and how close it is to the desert,” he said.

The president said the NYSC program was well thought out to unite the country through understanding.

“I feel very strong for the NYSC and wish you all the best.

“I assure you that you will be much better as Nigerians after your experience,” he added.

The Corps Liaison Officer, Mr. Umaru Babayo, thanked the President for all the efforts and sacrifices to restore peace in the country, and the policies of diversification of the economy, with agriculture as the main engine.

He said that the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, also showed a lot of kindness and warmth to the members of the body in his field, appreciating the community for always supporting them.

Babayo assured the President of prayers for a successful term and God’s providence in making decisions that will move the country forward.

Buhari, who gave the corps members two cows from his farm, 20 bags of rice and 1 million naira, had previously joined Muslim worshipers to observe the Eid-al-Kabir prayer.

The president, who answered reporters’ questions at the end of the prayer session, urged Nigerians to stand firm and be safety minded to meet the country’s security challenges.

He also called on Nigerians to help security agencies by exposing the bad elements of society, saying all peace-loving individuals must stand up against the activities of bandits and insurgents.

“Nigerians must stand firm and I think the Emir said it all and those who spoke to the people – they should be concerned about their safety.

“Those who distract from government at all levels – local, state and federal – live among them, they know them, let them expose them so that we have peace in the country,” he urged. (NAA)
