VAPP: UNFPA, GAC train judicial officers in Bauchi

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) with funding from the Global Affairs Canada (GAC) has trained 100 judicial workers and law enforcement agents on application of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law in Bauchi State.

Ms Deborah Tabara, the State Programme Officer, UNFPA-GAC project, stated this at the validation meeting with stakeholders on GAC Landscaping Preliminary Findings on Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in Bauchi.

According to her, the UNFPA-GAC project is being implemented in Itas-Gadau, Ningi, Kirfi, Gamawa and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas of the state.

Tabara said the trainees were exposed to content application of the law, adding that it also supported gazetting and dissemination of the VAPP in the state.

She said that orientation exercises were organised for women groups on VAPP,  SGBV, Harmful Traditional Practices (HTPs) and CEFM across 20 local government areas of the state.

The manager said that the project had conducted capacity building programmes to strengthen SGBV response mechanism at state and local government levels as well as 10 Technical Working Groups and referral network.

Tabara listed other projects executed under the UNFPA-GAC to include capacity building on obstetric fistula management for doctors and nurses as well as orientation of 150 health workers on prevention of fistula through urethral Catheterisation.

“Equipping of two Fistula Centres, including state of the arts equipment to the tune of N5.166 million equivalent to $170,144.835.

“Supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to National Fistula Centres in Ningi and Gamawa General Hospitals to ensure safety of health workers during routine repair.

“Repaired 558 fistula patients since inception of the programme in Bauchi State,” she said, adding that some 71 Fistula survivors were successfully rehabilitated, integrated and supported with start-up kits.

On campaign against early marriages, Tabara said the project had activited virtual radio safe space programme and distributed solar powered radio to 10,000 girls in junior and senior secondary schools.

Tabara said that some 8,000 mentors of girls safe space were also trained in five LGAs to facilitate supervision and monitoring on life skills curriculum, jolly phonics, standard practices and session preview.

Also speaking, Ms Sha’awanatu Yusuf, the Acting Director Public Prosecution, said the State House of Assembly had concluded amendments on the VAPP Law.

She said that the VAPP would be signed into law by Gov. Bala Mohammed.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the UNFPA-GAC project is being implemented in Bauchi, Oyo and Sokoto States, aimed at reducing maternal mortality, SGBV, obstetric fistula as well as creating enabling environment for gender equity and equality.

The UNFPA-GAC has also embarked on national baseline survey to enhance campaign against SGBV, fistula, harmful practices, early marriages and other forms of violence.
