Using toothpick is harmful — Dentist

A consultant family dentist, Dr. Basil Ojuku, has advised against the use of toothpicks for picking teeth because it is bad practice and detrimental to oral health.

Mr. Ojuku, who is also the head of public health at the Intercountry Center for Oral Health in Africa, Jos, gave the advice in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency, NAN, on Tuesday in Jos.

He explained that the practice of using toothpicks to pick up debris between the teeth could be harmful by causing injury to the gums between the teeth and narrowing the space between the gums.

He further said that the act would cause periodontitis, a serious gum infection that damages the gums and could destroy the jaw.

He advised that people should use dental floss instead of a toothpick to pick up or remove debris stuck in the gum between the teeth.

The dentist cautioned against filing teeth, as it can lead to erosion of the protective part of the tooth, known as enamel, which exposes the tooth to further damage.

In addition, he warned parents not to chew food such as meat and give it to their babies or young children, noting that doing so could result in the transfer of the bad bacteria from the adult’s mouth to the baby’s through the mouth. chewed food.

Mr. Ojuku further advised that Nigerians should desist from using their teeth to open bottled beverages, as the act is very damaging and could cause fracture of the tooth or teeth.

It revealed that it was important for people to know the correct methods of oral hygiene care.

He said that oral hygiene involves home care that involves brushing correctly and visiting the dentist for dental check-ups at least once a year.

The dentist said that the correct way to brush your teeth was after breakfast and late at night.

He explained that brushing your teeth before breakfast causes some food particles to get trapped between your teeth, allowing bacteria in your mouth to feed on the waste and this causes bad breath.

He advised that people should rinse their mouths with mouthwash or warm water after every meal.

According to him, the correct way to brush your teeth is to use the toothbrush to rub the toothpaste around your teeth before proceeding to brush them.

“When you finish rubbing the toothpaste, you start with the lower teeth and brush by moving the bristles up to remove debris and the upper teeth by sweeping the bristles down to remove debris.

“The only place you do a back and forth motion is on the chewing surfaces (the molars) to allow the bristles to clean the surface.

“You also brush your tongue, when you are done, do not rinse your mouth as most people do, because toothpaste contains many components that are necessary to fight cavities and other oral diseases, not rinsing helps to kill the bacteria in the mouth and prevent bad breath, “he explained.

He explained that the component of the toothpaste that remains in the mouth would help maintain fresh breath.

He also advised against the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes since the bristles can cause gum injuries, recommending that people go to the dentist at least once a year and make sure to brush twice a day.
