UNMISS to look into potential dialogue to end worsening Eastern Equatorian intercommunal violence

Villagers are desperate for outside assistance both to develop the area in terms of infrastructure and, mainly, to convince the young people in conflict to start living in harmony.

JUBA, South Sudan, January 10, 2022 / APO Group / –

As inter-community relations in and around the village of Loguruny in Eastern Equatoria state appear to be deteriorating, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan will ask local partners to jointly organize a dialogue between the parties involved in recent conflicts. .

According to locals, including previously displaced people who recently returned to their homes, the situation is becoming unmanageable.

“We have returned from Kakuma [refugee camp in Kenya] And now they shoot us like animals They killed my only son and just stoned me when I went to fetch water. Most of the people looking for firewood or other things are being attacked, ”Rose Ihisa said when meeting with the patrol team of the peacekeeping mission.

Livestock thefts, revenge killings, highway ambushes and other incidents of violence have plagued the area for years, but widespread hunger appears to exacerbate tensions. The lack of educational opportunities for the youth of Lobira, Burung, Iloli and Loguruny makes matters even worse, and the idle youth become more likely to fight.

“I am a principal, but both teaching and learning are difficult here. The children sit under the trees, we have no facilities and I use cardboard boxes as makeshift blackboards. Some of these young people simply find cattle theft more interesting, ”lamented Augustine Odwa.

Villagers are desperate for outside assistance both to develop the area in terms of infrastructure and, mainly, to convince the young people in conflict to start living in harmony.

The UN peacekeeping mission is ready and ready to do its part.

“We will analyze your request and share it and discuss it with the local authorities. Hopefully we can bring together all the parties in conflict for a dialogue that allows them to resolve their differences, ”said Civil Affairs Officer Francis Jeremiah Shuei.
