UNMISS holds peace dialogue to resolve long-standing intercommunal conflict in Rumbek

I urge you all to embrace peace, dialogue and the determination to strengthen social cohesion in Barghel from the ground up

JUBA, South Sudan, September 28, 2021 / APO Group / –

A two-day peacebuilding dialogue jointly organized by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Ministry of Peacebuilding in Rumbek recently concluded in Wulu County.

The main objective: Bring together the communities residing in Barghel, Wulu County, and Agangerial, Cuiebet County, and allow discussions between them to reduce instances of inter-community conflict and improve peaceful coexistence.

Over the past five years, tensions between residents of the two counties have remained high and have often resulted in clashes that have resulted in loss of life, destruction of property and displacement.

The event brought together the Wulu and Cuiebet County Commissioners and brought together youth groups, women representatives, community leaders and elders to find solutions to end internal conflicts.

Speaking at the event, Wulu County Commissioner Jimma Dafalla Rajaf encouraged the two communities to resolve differences amicably and create an environment that encourages displaced people to return to their original settlements. .

“The cost of intercommunal conflict is borne by innocent people – women, young children and men,” said Commissioner Rajaf. “If you want your children to have the opportunity to build a better future for themselves, you will need to take individual responsibilities and work together to create a more harmonious environment for them to grow up and complete their education.

Cueibet County Commissioner Isaiah Akol Mathiang echoed his counterpart.

“There is nothing positive that emerges from a conflict,” he said. “It only prolongs the suffering of the communities. I therefore urge you all to embrace peace, dialogue and determination to strengthen social cohesion in Barghel from the ground up. Once peace is restored, you will all be able to cultivate your farms and usher in an era of prosperity and stability for all.

For his part, Abraham Makon, a community representative, pointed out that residents of the two counties have already taken steps to reconcile their differences and put aside the scars of the past.

“We are grateful to the state government and UNMISS for their efforts to improve the overall security situation in our areas, which has significantly improved our ability to move freely and improve our livelihoods through small business, ”he said. “We understand the monetary value of lasting peace and we are making efforts at our level to resolve any misunderstandings between the two communities.”

Abraham’s words were reinforced by Chol Kuotwel, the local peace mediator working with the two counties.

“Security, stability and respect for the rule of law are things to which every member of the community has a duty to contribute. We have to work with the authorities to ensure that criminals and to reduce its occurrence in the first place, ”he said.

The two-day forum ended with recommendations for the free movement of people, the sharing of resources, the formation of special courts for expeditious justice and joint efforts to reduce crime.
