Brussels, Belgium — On May 25, 2025, Union Saint-Gilloise ended 90 years of waiting for the Belgian league title with a 3-1 win over Gent. The victory secured them the championship, finishing three points ahead of Club Brugge.
Union kicked off the final matchday one point clear of defending champions Club Brugge, who were facing Antwerp. Early goals set the stage for Union, with Franjo Ivanovic scoring just 11 minutes into the match. The momentum seemed to favor Union, especially when Antwerp put Brugge behind.
However, Gent struck back with an equalizer just before halftime, courtesy of Andri Gudjohnsen. The anxiety in the stadium grew as both matches were tightly contested. In the crucial second half, substitute Promise David made a significant impact by scoring two goals within seven minutes, sealing the title for Union.
“It’s an incredible feeling, and it was a tough journey to get here,” said David, who had a remarkable outing after being introduced in the second half. His quick-fire goals sparked jubilation among fans at Stade Joseph Marien.
Union finished the season with 56 points, while Brugge’s draw with Antwerp left them at 53 points. The club had a historic track record, with their last title in 1935 before facing a decline that saw them drop to the fourth tier by the 1980s.
After significant investment led by Tony Bloom, owner of Brighton & Hove Albion, in recent years, Union made a strong return to top-flight football. After finishing as runners-up in 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, they finally achieved the coveted title this year.
Coach Sebastien Pocognoli expressed immense pride in his team’s performance: “We worked really hard every step of the way. The players showed heart, and we deserved this title.”
