UN chief condemns Al-Shabab attack in Mogadishu, Somalia
General Antonio Guterres
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the latest Al-Shabab attack on the Villa Rays hotel in Mogadishu, which caused multiple casualties, his spokesman said Tuesday.

Guterres is saddened that Somalia continues to be plagued by such heinous acts of terrorism and called for the perpetrators to be held to account, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, said in a statement.

The Secretary General expressed his condolences to the families of the mourners and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He reiterated that the United Nations stands firm with the Somali government and people against terrorism and violent extremism, the statement said.

Al-Shabab militants launched an attack on the heavily fortified hotel frequently used by government officials in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Sunday.
Al-Shabab militants, who have been fighting to topple the government for more than a decade, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the target was a meeting of officials at the hotel. ■
