Uganda suspends operations of 6 NGOs over fraud

A senior government official said on Tuesday that Uganda had suspended the operations of six non-governmental organizations (NGOs ) for suspected fraud .

Stephen Okello, executive director of the National NGO Office, told reporters that some of the organizations were involved in forging documents authorizing them to operate.

He added that INGOs have defrauded their donors and the individuals involved in the electronic fraud.

“The NGO’s board of directors has noted with great concern the increase in fraudulent practices involving certain NGOs and members of the general public.

“There are unscrupulous individuals who take advantage of the NGO sector to defraud their stakeholders.

“The NGO office, following its investigations, has caused arrests and taken action against some of the NGOs concerned,” Okello said.

Okello said the office revoked the license and certificate of Comforter of the Afflicted Formation Home, Agape Sanctuary Ministries International and Christ Alive Glorious Ministries International for alleged fraud, extortion and embezzlement.

He added that the operations of Equal Opportunities for Women and Children in Uganda, Dankind Academy and Global Health Community Empowerment have been suspended for alleged forgery of documents, fraud of their stakeholders and electronic fraud.

Okello said the NGO office was investigating a number of fraud cases involving certain NGOs in the country.

“We warn the general public and key stakeholders that in their dealings with certain NGOs, they should always be more vigilant and exercise due diligence in their dealings.

“We are warning the NGO sector to be more transparent and accountable, in order to avoid fraudulent practices as they tarnish their credibility, their image and the reputation of the sector as a whole,” Okello said.
