  Twenty eight hopefuls have expressed interest in running for Uganda s nine seats in the East African Legislative Assembly EALA On Monday September 19 2022 the nomination documents of 15 candidates all independent applicants were received 13 candidates submitted their nomination papers on Tuesday 20 September 2022 the last day of the two day activity chaired by the Secretary of Parliament Adolf Mwesige Kasaija in the Parliament Conference Room According to records a total of 18 independent candidates submitted their nomination papers while six candidates from the ruling National Resistance Movement NRM party also expressed interest The Democratic Party the Justice Forum JEEMA the Forum for Democratic Change FDC and the Uganda People s Congress UPC fielded one candidate each to compete for opposition seats The nominees on the second day included all six candidates led by NRM These are Paul Musamali Rose Akol Stephen Odongo James Kakooza Mary Mugyenyi and Denis Namara Candidates backed by various opposition political parties were also nominated on the second day including Gerald Siranda of DP Fred Ebil of UPC and Harold Kaija of FDC According to the Secretary of Parliament Adolf Mwesige Kasaija the nomination papers must be verified by a verification committee after which the names of the successful candidates will be published These will then be invited to an open campaign before the members of the 11th Parliament who make up the electorate on Thursday 29th September 2022 in Parliament According to the EALA roadmap by September Parliament should have officially selected and published Ugandan representatives for the Arusha based Assembly

3 13 candidates submitted their nomination papers on Tuesday 20 September 2022, the last day of the two-day activity chaired by the Secretary of Parliament, Adolf Mwesige Kasaija, in the Parliament Conference Room. According to records, a total of 18 independent candidates submitted their nomination papers, while six candidates from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party also expressed interest.
