Jordan and the U.S. on Thursday inaugurated a counterterrorism training facility south of the Jordanian capital Amman, to increase the capacity of police forces in the region.

The centre will provide training in hard skills such as “crisis response, explosive incident countermeasures, post-blast investigations, and tactical medicine,” a statement said.

The regional centre, which is part of larger police training facility, has been established as part of the U.S. State Department’s Antiterrorism Assistance (ATA) programme.

“With its cutting-edge curriculum and equipment grants, the ATA programme continues to contribute greatly to the security of our nation, our partners worldwide, and overall international peace and stability,” according to the U.S. embassy in Amman.

Antiterrorism Assistance

Through the Antiterrorism Assistance programme, police personnel from Jordan and 21 other nations received training, the statement added.

In February, the U.S. pledged 6.37 billion dollars in aid over five years to Jordan, a key regional ally.

The new agreement represented a 27 per cent increase from the previous deal.

By virtue of its geography Jordan has, for decades, been vulnerable to the fallout of conflicts in neighbouring countries.

It borders Syria, Iraq, Israel, the Palestinian Territories and Saudi Arabia.

The country’s lack of natural resources has left it dependent on aid.
