Tsafe Local Government in Zamfara has embarked on a massive campaign against illegal mining in the area, according to its chairman, Alhaji Aminu Mudi.
Mudi told the State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and officials of the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development on Thursday that the target was to halt illegal and primitive mining.
The Nigeria News Agency , reports that the Commandant and the ministry officials were in Tsafe for
mop-up surveillance on mining sites and sensitisation of artisanal miners against illegal mining activities.
Mudi said that his council would partner with stakeholders to sensitise the artisans on the importance of acquiring mining licences so as to improve the Internally Generated Revenue of the council.
“Since the Federal Government banned mining activities in the state, mining in this area has stopped. The few engaged in the activity are artisanal miners.
“We have licenced mining companies operating in this area, but majority of them are not owned by indigenes of Zamfara.
“We are partnering with you to sensitise our people to acquire licences so that they can participate in lawful mining activities and generate more revenue for government at all levels,” Mudi said.
The Chairman, however, expressed concern that licensed mining companies in the area were not engaged in any social cooporate responsibility activity for the host communities, and urged them to identify areas of need and provide some support to host communities.
