ZURICH, Switzerland, September 25, 2021 / APO Group / –

1998 FIFA World Cup winner says players need matches in the calendar to have a higher profile; former France star says fewer windows for national team football will increase quality; the actors are among the stakeholders consulted within the framework of a broad reflection.

David Trezeguet praised the extensive review process of the international football match calendar, saying that by “eliminating” lesser matches, the quality and global competitiveness of football will increase.

With no match schedule in place after 2024, FIFA is facilitating discussions in a wide-ranging review with many and varied stakeholders and Trezeguet looks forward to the results contributing to a truly global football of the future. .

“From the players’ point of view, a change is needed in my opinion,” said the former France international. “We are all aware that there are a lot of matches at club level and at international level, so we have to understand that the players are tired between all the trips and the high level competitions. One can try to increase the level of the game and eliminate the games which are less useful for the players.

“Since 1930, we have had the same idea of matches: friendly matches, qualifying matches and [FIFA] World Cup, ”Trezeguet recalls. “But, in my opinion, we also have to keep in mind that the fans want bigger shows and more games at the highest level. In friendlies – or lower level matches – we may be less prepared physically and mentally for it.

Trezeguet was a member of the France squad which kicked off a period of domination of European teams at the FIFA World Cup, with four of the five tournaments since then also won by teams from the continent. With 133 of FIFA’s 211 members yet to make their debut on the biggest stage of all, this global review process is seen as an opportunity to level the playing field and increase the competitiveness of world football.

“In my opinion, we must give a chance to the ambitions, desires and dreams of countries from other continents, which are not so well known on the big stage,” added Trezeguet. “When we talk about giving countries a chance, it is the dream of playing a high level qualifying campaign bearing in mind that the end goal is to play [FIFA] World Cup. I think playing the World Cup is every kid’s dream. When you are a kid who later becomes a footballer, it is the idea of representing your country and the pride that comes with it.
