Tokyo Olympics: Nigerian athletes suffer from sleep disorders as they struggle to acclimatize – video

By Ijeoma Okigbo

Some Nigerian athletes scheduled to compete in the Tokyo Olympics are suffering from sleep disturbances as they struggle to adjust to Japan’s time zone, which is eight hours ahead of Nigeria’s.

In a video clip from Tokyo, directed by Nigerian Taekwondo Federation member Chika Chukwumerije, the Olympians praised the federal government for sending them to Tokyo early, ahead of the Games.

Quadri Aruna, table tennis player and captain of the Nigerian team, who complained of difficulty sleeping, said: “It’s a good decision to be here early. I came two days ago, still myself and some athletes have trouble sleeping.

“I think over the next five days we can get used to it and that will help us a lot as the Games begin,” said Aruna.

Another table tennis player Offiong Edem said her sleeping and training time had been affected due to the new time zone.

“Since I arrived here a few days ago, I have had trouble sleeping due to jet lag, but I think I can sleep now.

“Earlier it was a bit difficult for me and I struggled with my workouts in the morning, but my body is getting used to it and things are improving,” said Edem.

For her part, Yinka Ajayi, an athlete in the 400m, also said: “Like my colleagues, I have trouble sleeping but I will get used to it and get better in the next few days before the start of the Olympics. “.

A total of 61 athletes represent Nigeria in nine sports at the Games which are slated to start on July 23 and end on August 5. (NOPE)
